Kiting and Flying Site Guides

Flying Sites

The Bay Area offers many beautiful flying sites, not limited to the sites listed below. Before flying any site, please read any available site guides, reach out to the local pilots, and follow all regulations. Other sources of information for Bay Area flying include the Bay Area Paragliding Association and The Wing of Rogallo.

Kiting Sites

Kiting is great fun and an important part of every pilots training and continued growth.  In the Bay Area of Northern California we are fortunate to have many exceptional kiting venues. This site guide is not exhaustive and is meant to be a living document that will grow and change over time. If you have pertinent information about any of the locations in this guide, please email me at [email protected]
Here are some general guidelines for anytime that you plan on kiting.
  1. Choose a location that will be kind to your wing.  Grass is best if possible.  Be mindful of rocks, plants, debris, or anything else that may cause wear or damage to your wing.
  2. Be mindful of your overall surroundings.  Park where you are supposed to park. Kite in an area that does not impact the activities of anybody else.  Do not kite in an area where you could potentially injure anybody else, line burn is real and dangerous.
  3. Stay within your own safe kiting limits.  Do not kite when there is a threat of getting dragged or “plucked”.
  4. Wear personal protective gear that includes a helmet, gloves, pants, and sturdy boots or shoes.
  5. If you are somewhere that an unintentional flight could happen, be sure that you are fully ready to fly before you inflate a wing.
  6. Be an ambassador of our sport!  People are going to be curious and ask you what you are doing.  Take the time to smile and answer some questions.
  7. Set a goal for yourself for each kiting session. It could be as simple as keeping the wing above your head for a sustained duration of time or as complicated as a ground heli. Goals will keep you motivated.
